In college, Matt felt like he had to hold it all together and have everything figured out — always busy, always doing, and always being ‘productive’. But if you’re busy and productive at the expense of your mental health and well-being — eventually the stress manifests as burnout. Beneath the surface, there’s often a relentless inner critic pushing you to do more, be better, and never make a mistake. You’ve been taught that self-criticism is a motivator, when in reality, beating yourself up doesn’t make you better — it actually burns you out. It doesn’t facilitate growth. It hinders it – leaving you overwhelmed, anxious, and stuck in cycles of perfectionism and procrastination.
The solution? Mindfulness and compassion. Self-compassion isn’t soft or indulgent. It’s not going to cause you to lose your ambition. Those who practice self-compassion tend to be more emotionally resilient, mentally healthy, and better able to bounce back from setbacks. It’s not about lowering standards — it’s about creating the conditions for sustainable success.
In this program, Matt invites participants to let go of the pressure to be perfect and instead build the inner skills that will help you build a more resilient mindset grounded in love and compassion — so you can thrive, both on campus and beyond it.
Audience members will…
Unlock the hidden costs of self-criticism and its antidote: self-compassion

Most of us weren’t taught how to understand our emotions. Most of us weren’t given the permission to feel. We were taught to suppress emotions, hide them, or “power through.” But the truth is, emotions aren’t a distraction or liability. They’re a superpower — if, and only if, you know how to work with them instead of against them.
Matt learned the hard way that when you ignore or judge how you feel, those emotions don’t disappear — they get buried alive. And what’s buried often manifests itself as stress, disconnection, and self-sabotage. But when your relationship with your emotions starts to change, so do you. When you start to view them with curiosity and compassion — you stop reacting impulsively and start responding intentionally.
Those who develop emotional intelligence have been proven to be more confident, connected, and successful — personally, professionally, and academically. IQ will get you in the door — into a prestigious university or internship — but what separates good leaders from great leaders are those who have emotional intelligence. They communicate with clarity and have the courage to lead authentically from their hearts.
In this program, Matt helps participants build emotional intelligence and use it as a tool for powerful self-leadership — because to better understand and manage your emotions is to better understand and manage yourself. And it’s the foundation for becoming the kind of leader people actually want to follow — starting with yourself.
Audience members will…
Explore the five core components and understand the role emotions play in effective decision-making, communication, and leadership
Practice and develop strategies to increase self-awareness, emotional regulation, and empathy toward others
Use emotional intelligence as a foundation for authentic, heart-centered leadership

In achievement-driven campus environments, it’s easy to confuse temporary wins with lasting fulfillment. Grades, internships, leadership titles, social validation — they feel good for a moment. But when the high fades, many students are left feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and wondering why success doesn’t feel more satisfying.
In this program, Matt challenges the belief that happiness is something you reach once you “figure your life out” and instead reframes it as something you intentionally build. He explores how happiness is not a personality trait or lucky circumstance, but a byproduct of the consistent daily choices we make — what we focus on, how we speak to ourselves, and how we show up in our relationships. Through research-backed tools and practical daily habits, students learn how to build a resilient mindset that supports both academic success and personal well-being.
This program empowers students to stop chasing happiness through achievement — and start creating it, one intentional day at a time.

- Recognize how thought patterns and comparison culture impact stress, confidence, and overall well-being
- Build the mindset tools necessary to navigate stress, setbacks, and pressure without sacrificing well-being or performance
- Apply simple, repeatable daily practices that strengthen mindset, connection, and sustained motivation

Meet Matt Kovatchis
Matt Kovatchis, CPCC, is an ex-corporate banker turned mental health and self-compassion speaker, coach, and entrepreneur. He empowers students across the country to become heart-led leaders through eye-opening and inspirational keynotes on self-compassion, emotional intelligence, and self-love.
Prior to speaking, Matt spent seven years in corporate banking at multinational banks — giving him a front-row seat to the stress and emotional suppression often mistaken for strength. Externally, he had the “dream” life — checking all the boxes of what success was supposed to look like. Internally, though, he was miserable, empty, and alone — which led him on a journey of healing, self-discovery, and self-acceptance. We’re best equipped to serve the person we once were – exactly what Matt does today. Matt is also the founder and host of top 1% mental health podcast, The Men in the Arena With Matt Kovatchis & MD, and the author of Enjoying Your Own Company: A 75-day Guided Self-Love Journal.
Matt graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2017 and is a proud member of Alpha Tau Omega. Known for having “never met a stranger,” when he’s not speaking, you can find him exploring new coffee shops, consuming Japanese sweet potatoes, or hanging with his rescue dog, Patty.
